David Carey (Ireland)

David Carey

David J. Carey is a psychologist and lecturer at the Froebel College of Education in Dublin, Ireland. The college is one of Ireland's five primary (elementary) teacher training college. David is the Coordinator of special education and programme development at Froebel. He lectures at both the undergraduate and graduate level. David received his undergraduate degree in music education and after several years teaching in elementary, middle school and high school he began studies in psychology. He has a life-long interest in the healing power of music and over the past several years has been reading the available neuroscientific literature about the impact of music and song on children in distress. He was involved in a three-year study in Ireland on the impact of the creative arts on the lives and behaviour of children living in disadvantaged settings.

Currently David is involved in a volunteer educational development programme in Nairobi, Kenya where he directs a diploma course for Kenyan Kindergarten teachers and coordinates volunteer teacher placements in the slum schools of Nairobi. At the Froebel college David lectures in special education and works collaboratively with his colleagues in the arts department on a number of projects. He is the author of the book, "The Essential Guide to Special Education in Ireland" and is currently co-authoring a book on the impact of the arts on the education of children with special needs. David was born and raised in America and relocated to Dublin ten years ago. He travels extensively to arts conferences in Europe.
