Iwan Edwards (Canada)
Iwan Edwards has specialized in choral conducting since he came to Canada from his native Wales in September, 1965. He has gained an international reputation as a conductor, adjudicator, clinician and teacher. He was the founder-director of the St. Lawrence Choir (1972-2006), Concerto Della Donna (a young women's chamber choir) and the Chur des Enfants de Montré. He has worked with several other prominent Canadian choirs including the Ottawa Choral Society (1992-1996, 2001- 05), the Lanaudière International Festival Chorus (1996-98), the F.A.C.E. Treble Choir (1981-2001) and the Vancouver Bach Choir. His collaborations with these various choral organizations have resulted in performances with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Ensemble Amati, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Lanaudière Festival Orchestra, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra in the Czech Republic. His choirs and instrumental groups have traveled extensively in Canada, Europe and the U.S.A. The F.A.C.E. Treble Choir won prizes in Vienna, Arnhem and Llangollen and in the CBC Choral Competitions. Concerto Della Donna also won prizes in Llangollen and the CBC Choral Competition. 2005-2006 marked Iwan Edwards' twentieth (and final) season as director of the Chorus of l'Orchestre Symphonique de Montré. During his tenure, he conducted several of the annual OSM performances of Handel's Messiah at Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, in addition to numerous other choral works. Maestro Edwards also served as guest conductor of the National Youth Choir of Canada in 1998 and 1999. As an associate professor and Chair of the Choral Department at McGill University (1990-2001), he conducted the McGill Chamber Singers, the University Chorus and the McGill Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He also supervised students pursuing graduate studies in choral conducting.
