NEW PROGRAM - Professional Development for Small Vocal Ensembles
This program is a unique and exceptional opportunity for small (maximum 8 members) a cappella vocal ensembles! Ensembles will work with members of the international Finnish vocal ensemble, Rajaton, and Bob Chilcott, former member of The King's Singers, in masterclasses, individual coaching sessions and in a special small ensemble concert series during the Festival. Additional performance opportunities (acoustic) will be available throughout the week. This program provides an excellent venue for emerging groups to hone their skills and artistry. Participation will be limited to 12 groups. Selection will be by audition.
Come Solo
Not in a choir? Not to worry... Come Solo!
Festival 500 welcomes individuals to come and share in this incredible choral experience. Individuals who are not performing with a registered choir are invited to attend workshops led by choral experts, hear dynamic choirs from around the world each evening in concert, share in the spirit and excitement of the Opening Ceremonies and sing in the Massed Adult Choir in the Grande Finale concert under the direction of distinguished Norwegian conductor, Grete Pedersen.
Come Solo Festival Choir
Come solo participants also have the option to sing in the popular Come Solo Festival Choir. Individuals from all over the world will come together to form their very own choir, rehearse together throughout the week and then perform as a featured choir at a World of Music concert! Past participants are still expressing how much fun they had last time, so we've invited renowned Swedish choral conductor Fred Sjöberg back for an encore appearance! Don't miss all the fun... come sing with us!

Conducting Masterclass
Calling all choral conductors… join the Conducting Masterclass!
Festival 500 offers six conductors the opportunity to work with renowned Swedish choral conductor Fred Sjöberg in a highly enriched pedagogical setting. Conductors work with a resident choir on repertoire that has been pre-selected. In addition to pre-conducting seminars, each conductor will receive approximately 30-minutes of podium time during each masterclass. Sessions are videotaped and time is provided for individual reflection and analysis with the clinician. Participants are selected through an audition process and also have the option to take this class for graduate credit through the Festival 500 Choral institute. Applications are due February 1, 2011. An additional fee will apply to this option.
Voice Masterclass
Let your voice be heard… sing in the Voice Masterclass!
Festival 500 offers singers and choristers the opportunity to work with acclaimed Canadian vocal coach and collaborative pianist, Peter Tiefenbach. Participants will be selected through an audition process. Participants have the option to take this class for a portion of a course for graduate credit through the Festival 500 Choral Institute. Applications are due February 1, 2011. An additional fee will apply to this option.
Choral Institute
Earn graduate credit through the Choral Institute!
Festival 500 and Memorial University of Newfoundland offer opportunities for graduate study through the Festival 500 Choral Institute. Memorial’s Faculty of Education and School of Music collaborate to offer a complement of three graduate courses in the areas of choral conducting, vocal/choral pedagogy, and singing traditions and practices. Through guided and mentored participation in both The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VIII and the choral festival, graduate students can expand their knowledge of and experience with all aspects of singing… and earn graduate credit at the same time! Capacity is limited so be sure to enquire about this opportunity and register early. Separate fee stucture applies.
