Festival 500 Sharing the Voices is
a celebrated international biennial festival of choral music, which
takes place in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador over the
course of one full week. While it is a non-competitive festival,
choirs are required to go through an audition process and must be
invited to participate in this Festival. Choirs are given the
opportunity to perform and participate in various concerts,
workshops, clinics and masterclasses - all delivered by world
leaders in their respective fields.
For thousands of years, the human voice has been the medium through which everything and anything of any importance is revealed to the world. Songs are the basic building blocks of choral music. They have functioned as beacons for joy, sirens for mystery, laments for grief and bells tolling disaster for as long as we have recorded the passage of time. With their rhythms, rhymes and meanings, songs have always been with us... local and global acts practised by all of humanity. So, to all who are planning to visit St. John's in 2011, identify your songs that signify important landmarks and events in your lives, locales and cultures and bring those songs to share at Festival 500.
Who knows where this kind of sharing might lead? Who knows what seemingly impossible quandaries might be conquered, all through the power of song.
